RFID-Based Container Tracking System (CTS) for Colombo Port

Powerdrive Technologies proudly designed and implemented the first-ever Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-based Container Tracking System (CTS) for the Colombo Port, a key project commissioned by the Sri Lanka Port Authority under the Government of Sri Lanka. This groundbreaking solution has greatly enhanced the efficiency and precision of container terminal operations.

Project Overview

The existing Container Terminal Management (CTM) system at Colombo Port, which already included satellite-based yard mapping and automated gate operations, required an advanced solution to address real-time tracking of container movements within the terminal. Powerdrive Technologies’ RFID-based system bridged this critical gap, enabling seamless monitoring and optimization of container operations across the port.

Key Features and Technical Components

  1. RFID-Enabled Tracking: Active RFID tags were installed on terminal trucks, with RFID readers strategically positioned at gates and gantries throughout the port. These readers captured container movement data in real time, ensuring precise tracking of containers as they moved within the terminal. This automation significantly enhanced container handling and management efficiency.

  2. DGPS/GPS Integration: The CTS was further enhanced with the integration of Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) technologies. This allowed for precise monitoring of container stacking and unstacking operations, ensuring accurate location tracking and reducing errors in container positioning.

  3. Seamless System Integration: Powerdrive Technologies ensured seamless integration of the RFID-based CTS with the port’s existing Navis Sparcs Container Terminal Operation System (TOS) and Navis Express Gate Operation System. This integration allowed for real-time data sharing across platforms, enabling the Sri Lanka Port Authority to optimize container movement and facilitate rapid, data-driven decision-making.

Benefits and Impact

  • Operational Efficiency: Automation of container tracking processes minimized manual interventions, significantly improving operational speed and reducing human error.
  • Enhanced Visibility and Security: The RFID and GPS integration provided full visibility of container movements, improving tracking accuracy and operational security within the port.
  • Future Scalability: The system was designed to accommodate the growing needs of the port, ensuring scalability for future expansions.

Conclusion

Powerdrive Technologies is honored to have partnered with the Sri Lanka Port Authority to implement this state-of-the-art RFID-based Container Tracking System at Colombo Port. Our solution has significantly contributed to the port’s operational efficiency, setting a new benchmark for real-time container tracking and port management in the region. This project underscores our commitment to delivering cutting-edge technological solutions that meet the evolving needs of global logistics and port operations.
